The SMART USA Institute will advance semiconductor manufacturing through digital twins—virtual models that replicate physical objects. This technology allows engineers to design, develop, and test processes digitally, enhancing production efficiency, optimizing chip design, and reducing costs. By leveraging digital twin technology, SMART USA will foster collaboration among industry, academia, and government partners, promoting a robust research-to-manufacturing infrastructure in the U.S.

SMART USA was established as the 18th institute within the Manufacturing USA network, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to enhance semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. The Institute will drive advancements in the semiconductor industry by reducing costs, shortening development cycles, increasing yield, and training the workforce. These efforts will increase U.S. manufacturing competitiveness and safeguard national security.

SMART USA is a proud member of Manufacturing USA®, a network of federally sponsored manufacturing innovation institutes. SMART USA is funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s CHIPS for America Program through an Other Transaction agreement with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and has significant additional support from its members.
